This week Martin Tyler writes about potential winners of this years title.
Tyler takes the remaining games that Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea have and replicated what happened when those teams met earlier in the season. If that were to actually happen Arsenal would be tied with Manchester United on points, but Arsenal would be crowned champs as they have a higher goal differential.
He also lists all the English players that have scored more than 20 goals in a World Cup year and not represented England that year, and lists off all the managers that aren’t British and have coached EPL.

This week, Sally Jenkins was apparently on break from writing her column, yet again.
As a result, I will be commenting on the article that she wrote a few weeks ago that I never responded to. The article is titled “IOC failing in its responsibility to the Olympics,” and was written February 28.
It can be found at: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/27/AR2010022703315.html
The main premise of Jenkin’s column is the argument that the International Olympic Committee is turning into the ultimate political cover.
She makes this claim after bringing up a handful of examples that showcase how the IOC’s governing has not been very respectful this past winter Olympics.
These include the committee calling the Canadian women’s hockey team as scandalous for being photographed drinking from bottles of champagne after winning a gold medal, as well as poorly handling the death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili by not taking proper responsibility for the fatality.
As Jenkin’s sarcastically jokes that IOC President Jacques Rogge is “a man apparently devoid of humor except for the jokes he perpetrates unwittingly.” More than anything else, however, she criticizes him for tackling superficial issues such as hockey teams being photographed drinking and failing to take ownership of the issues that are most important to address, like Kumaritashvilli’s death.
I completely agree with her. It seems the Olympics are still so cherished and successful because of how impressive the athletes continually compete year after year, NOT because of how they are governed—which apparently consists of a bunch of obnoxious royalties dining on expensive seafood.

This week, Dan Steinberg shares a video from CSNWashington.com about Gilbert Arenas walking to a D.C courtroom for his sentencing about the gun incident in December. Out of nowhere, a little girl ask Arenas for his autograph.
A large number of reporters, photographers, and video camera people stood in pause as Arenas signs the autograph from one of his youngest fan.
As for the court case itself, Arenas was sentenced to two months prohibition, 30 days in a halfway house, and 400 hours of community service. Steinberg then lists a number of quotes about the final verdict on Arenas from various D.C media outlets and reporters.

Grant Wahl did not write a column this week. This column, published March 9, is an interview with American goalkeeper Tim Howard. Howard plays for English club Everton, currently 8th in the Premier League.
Wahl is one of few full-time soccer journalists in the mainstream media. He has great access to American players, coaches and executives because he works for Sports Illustrated.
The in-depth nature of the interview and Wahl’s detailed style of writing shows why Wahl is respected in the American soccer circle.

http://www.boston.com/sports/colleges/mens_basketball/articles/2010/03/29/spartan_regimen__the_final_four/?page=2
Today, columnist Bob Ryan wrote about the Michigan St./Tennessee game which resulted in MSU heading to the Final Four. His first sentence explains it all, “This one had Last Shot inscribed on it from the minute they threw it up.”
Ryan does not even tell the reader the final score of this game until the sixth paragraph. This is significant because for people like me, who were not able to watch this game, his story makes you feel as if you are at the game. This game was between two very talented, similar teams, which Ryan explains, and it shows in his writing. Although he does not say it, this was a game that someone would not want to miss.
First, Ryan explains the detailed last 11.2 seconds of the game, which both teams were tied with 69 points. He already has the reader hooked, and finally explains how Tennessee messed up and MSU ended up with the final point to make it 70-69.
It is okay, in this case, for Ryan to leave the final score for the sixth paragraph because he makes the reader feel as if they are at the game. He wants the reader to experience what the audience experienced while watching the game, and it was a success.

This week Rick Reilly writes about Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl who has taken a leave of absence from coaching to battle cancer. In the column Reilly follows Karl for two days in which he receives his radiation treatments.
I thought this article was especially touching because it showed exactly what was going through a persons head while they were in treatment. Reilly didn’t pull any punches on questions he asked. It ranged from everyday questions to questions about death.

This week, Dan Shaugnessy reacted to complaints from Kentucky. He wrote an article talking about Kentucky basketball and took a few jabs at the Kentucky coach.
It was interesting to read Shaughnessy’s sarcastic and snide remarks regarding the complaints of Kentucky. He comments using short, one line paragraphs remarked on how the fans commented on his article with grammatially incorrect sentences and misspellings.
“People. It’s “you’re’’ a racist. Not “your.’’
Shaugnessy never fails to cause controversy!

He also provided a Q&A with an accompanying video with it.

Atlanta presses ballhawking as regular season winds down
By: Jeff Zillgitt,
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/nba/hawks/2010-03-23-atlanta-presses-ballhawking-as-regular-season-winds-down_N.htm
Jeff wrote his second-straight article about the Atlanta Hawks in two days. I guess he remembered I loved the Hawks when we came to speak to our class and is rewarding me for walking him to Sandy Creek parking deck.
This article is interesting because Jeff basically predicts the Hawks to make it to the second round of the playoffs. He talks about how Hawks coach, Mike Woodson, is motivating the team to become better defenders.
After reading the first paragraph, I was really looking forward to viewing, “the video montage of his [Atlanta Hawks] team’s excellent and poor defense this season.” The link or the video was nowhere to be found.
Even though I love the Hawks, I have to say, I was a little disappointed. A few days after Smith’s game winning dunk I am reading about the Hawks defense. None the less, I cannot be unhappy, two consecutive stories about the Atlanta Hawks forces me to read Jeff’s articles every week.

DiCesare discuss the Bills attempting to get Mcnabb from the Eagles.
This time, he actually wrote something that I get. Sometimes his writing tends to be a lot of wordy words and not so much to what he is trying to say. This time he wrote in more concise sentances. Although, there were still some wordy sentences. I got what he was trying to say. There was a lot of humor, he actually is pretty funny.

The article Mariotti wrote is about how he now is picking West Virginia to win the national championship. However the entire article goes into how this whole tournament will become like a serious, unforseen winner in this entire tournament. He also mentions the fact that the haters of Duke have reason to pay attention to the final four now because of their involvement. He mentions Bob Huggins who was arrested for a DUI not a few years ago and was dismissed from his job at Cincinnatti has found redemption coaching West Virginia to its first final four since Jerry West played on the team in 1959.

This week, Sam and Chad took notes from
previous spring training games. I paid close attention to how they wrote their numbers in APA style because I always seem to get confused in that area. I noticed they wrote out first, second, etc in word
form while writing out 1-for-1, batting averages and innings using the numerical.
Today the Yanks are in my stomping grounds – Disney! They are playing the Braves at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista. I always wanted WDW to be the Yanks spring training spot, but Legends Field is nice also.

This week Gene Wojciechowski wrote about implementation of the new overtime rule in the NFL for next season.
Wojciechowski continues to use a humorous writing style to appeal to his readers: “If it were a punt, the NFL owners just shanked the overtime rules off the side of their foot.”
He focuses on how the problem was the original overtime rule, and this will have to be good enough for now. It will be interesting to see how the league adapts to the rule next season.

http://goal.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/30/rare-struggles-for-argentine-powers/
This week Jack Bell wrote about two Argentinian teams struggle for power. River Plate and Boca Juniors could normally be found in the top half of the standings but are now in the bottom.
He had long quotes throughout the entire blog. He still set up his writing in the usual long paragraph followed by a short paragraph/sentence sequence. I did not enjoy it as much though because most of the quotes were pretty meaty and all from the same source.
Out of all of the blogs I have read of his so far, this was definitely my least favorite. It was just a little dry for me and didn’t really have much personality to it. Also, having so many quotes come from just one person, no matter how credible the man is, caused me to think that he did not spend much time on this topic.
