GRADED EXERCISE: In the comments section below, add the three things you learned from USA Today NBA beat writer Jeff Zillgitt on Tuesday March 23.
Deadline is noon Tuesday March 30.
March 24th, 2010 at 10:26 pm
1. It takes great skill to cover the little events and find good stories worth writing about.
2. Call someone just to call, don’t need anything.
3. There is a difference in covering a game and covering an event.
March 25th, 2010 at 12:03 am
Three things I learned from Jeff Zillgitt were:
1. Using your eyes and ears is one of the most important aspects of journalism. You must be aware at all times.
2. Hard work and dedication are both extremely necessary. It is possible that upon entering the workplace, a typical sleeping schedule could be 12:20 to 12:50 in the morning if a huge story is breaking.
3. You don’t have time to comprehend how big a story is while you are writing it. You just have to get it done; instincts will take over and adrenaline will kick in.
March 25th, 2010 at 12:39 am
1)You can’t be everywhere at once, so working the phones can be very helpful.
2)When covering some stories, adrenalin will kick in and your skills just get set into motion, you don’t have to think about what you are doing, you just do it.
3)Anybody can cover the big game, but it takes alot to go to a smaller event and come out with a good story.
March 25th, 2010 at 2:16 am
1. Observing is the most important key for journalists.
2. You can’t be everywhere at once. Use social media to stay up-to-date.
3. Make connections and network during the off season.
March 25th, 2010 at 10:38 am
I did not attend class, but what i gather is
Awareness is key, pay attention to everything
You cant be everywhere, social media is crucial in this day.
There is a difference between covering a game and an event.
March 25th, 2010 at 11:43 am
1. Work the phones, it is a great way to get information when you can’t be somewhere.
2. Obtaining background information at all times, even off the record can point you in the right direction to find a good story.
3. Get educated in whatever sport you are covering and use your resources.
March 25th, 2010 at 11:52 am
Here is what I learned from Jeff Zillgitt
1. You may be there to cover a specific game or event, but you have to know when the game or event is the most important and when something outside of the game or event is the most important thing.
2. Off-season connections are an integral part of good journalism.
3. Off the record can lead you in a direction that is more profitable then on the record comments.
March 25th, 2010 at 1:35 pm
The three things that I took were;
1) You can not be everywhere at once so utilize the phones.
2) The call you make off season is highly important.
3) Use all your senses when writting a story.
March 25th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
1. Off-season calls are important in order to know what is going on and to build knowledge.
2. Background and off-the-record information helps steer you in the right direction.
3. Use your eyes and ears. Be aware of what is happening around you.
March 25th, 2010 at 10:52 pm
1. Remember that the skills you learn as a journalist make you a valuable employee in ANY workplace.
2. Don’t worry about covering tragedies. Adrenaline and all the journalism skills you’ve acquired over the years will take over.
3. The distinguishing factor in good writing is telling the stories that other writers don’t see.
March 28th, 2010 at 5:12 pm
1) Be aware of surroundings at all costs.
2) The journalism business is hard work and sometimes it requires a 30 minute sleep session such as a major sports story breaking in after midnight
3)You can call any player for news regarding injuries or other issues that has an affect on the sports landscape.
March 29th, 2010 at 5:10 pm
What I learnd from Jeff Zillgitt:
1. Always ask a ton of questions.
2. When you can’t be at a certain place, use a phone and call for information.
3. Skills learned here (in the classroom) will be used in any job, whether or not it is sports related or journalism.
March 29th, 2010 at 8:13 pm
1. Anyone can go cover a story. Editors want someone to write a story people want to read the next morning.
2. You should always work the phones, check in with your sources, and keep your credibility high.
3. You know when you get something out of someone that no one else has.
March 29th, 2010 at 8:30 pm
1. observe everything going on around you, don’t focus on one thing.
2.Use all sorts of different ways of communicating to get information.
3.Finding stories in the story is what gets people to really read and get interested.
March 29th, 2010 at 8:56 pm
Three things I learned from Jeff Zillgitt:
1. Journalistic skills kick in naturally
2. Using an inside source for good information is a good idea.
3. Keeping a recorder in your pocket instead of holding it is less intimidating.
March 30th, 2010 at 9:46 am
Three things: I was not in class, but this is what I learned.
1.Use an insider to obtain more information. Be aware of people around you.
2. Being a journalist is difficult. Be ready to work long hours.
3. Make sure you stay with your credibility. Check your sources.
March 30th, 2010 at 11:13 am
Three things I learned:
1. I learned that working the phones is an important because you can’t be everywhere at once.
2. Using your sources but not burning them is key to having a good inside source you can depend on.
3. The skills you learn at school for being a journalist can be useful in any workplace.
March 30th, 2010 at 11:41 am
Three things I learned from Jeff Zilget.
1. Don’t be afraid to use the phones.
2. Never burn your sources.
3. Always be sure to make sure you put your credibility above all other things.
March 30th, 2010 at 12:45 pm
Three things I learned from Jeff where:
1. Anybody can cover the big games, it takes more skill to cover little stories and make them interesting.
2.Knowing how to find info make you a valuable employee, not just important for journalist.
3. Calling people when u don’t need anything often gives you stuff you need and want later down the road
March 30th, 2010 at 1:04 pm
Three things I learned from Jeff Zillgitt:
1. When interviewing someone, don’t just immediately throw a recorder right in their face and start asking questions. Try to be a little more in the background and be a familiar face to establish a relationship. After that relationship is formed, the questions and responses will flow much easier.
2. Part of a reporters job in the 21st century is to give your followers on Twitter an idea of what’s going on.
3. Sometimes you need to call people when you don’t even need anything in order to build a personal relationship. In doing so, it is important to be aware of which people you can just call and talk to from those who you only call in emergencies or occasionally.
April 1st, 2010 at 10:45 am
Three things I learned from Jeff Zillgitt:
1.) Sometimes it’s helpful to talk to/call athletes off-the-record because you can find a great story that way.
2.) Twitter is a new thing used by reporters to give people insight on their experiences like the Olympics.
3.) Use the sources you get but don’t burn them. Establish a working relationship so that athlete can be a great source for stories.

If people think you’re spamming, then all your marketing advertising will go down the drain since word of mouth
still counts for a lot these days. They tie up the technical and
creative aspects when they are using the internet.
Online businesses, as with all businesses, are no exception.
